THE TARRING AND FEATHERING OF J. K. McDOUGALL: 'DIRTY TRICKS' IN THE 1919 FEDERAL ELECTION.

Zdroj: Labour History; Nov1983, Issue 45, p54-67, 14p
Abstrakt: John Keith McDougall was a farmer, politician, and member of the Labor Party when he was taken from his home on the evening of 6 December 1919, a week before the 1919 federal election, and tarred and feathered by a group of men. Unfortunately for McDougall, some of his pro-Socialist and antiwar poems written decades earlier had been resuscitated by the press, taken out of their context, and reprinted as attacks on Australian involvement in World War I. When the six returned servicemen who did the tarring and feathering were hauled into court, the proceedings took on a decidedly political tone, and the men were let off with only a small fine.
