This essay examines the historical events that have transformed the landscape that formed the Hope estate, St Andrew, into a palimpsest. After looking briefly at the earliest settlement, that of the Taino, the discussion moves through the era of the establishment and development of the Hope sugar estate, to the acquisition of the site by the government and its use variously as the headquarters of the Department of Agriculture, a botanical garden, a seat of education and learning beginning with the Farm School, a diversified housing estate, and a commercial centre. The residue/traces of each phase creating the palimpsest are illustrated, indicating the human activities that have transformed this site into a truly historic landscape. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
