In view of the health benefits of smoking cessation on mortality from coronary artery disease, considerable efforts have been focused on various types of intervention for helping smokers to quit. The aim of this study of the literature was to identify those mechanisms which assist smoking cessation and to assess their effectiveness. Four electronic medical databases, MEDLINE, Cochrane, EMBASE and CINAHL (to 2006) were searched. Randomized controlled trials were selected which evaluated methods of pharmacological or non-pharmacological intervention for smoking cessation in patients with coronary artery disease. Of the 17 trials identified, four were trials of nicotine replacement therapy and 13 were trials of non-pharmacological methods. The results of the trials showed that the use of bupropion is superior to the application of the nicotine patch. Non-pharmacological methods investigated by trials included counselling, brief advice or risk factor modification. Physician- or nurse-led in-hospital intervention which is continued after discharge for 6 months by phone or one year by mail is probably the most effective. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
