The article presents an examination of the efforts of the Spanish and Portuguese, supplied and supported by Great Britain's Royal Navy, in combating the French under the command of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. It discusses the efforts of British Lieutenant General Sir Arthur Wellesley and Vice Admiral George Berkeley along with his Tagus squadron. The article focuses on fighting centered in Galicia, Spain in 1809 and notes that the operation succeeded in saving Portugal and driving the French from Galicia. It examines the use of British seaman and Royal Marines in fighting on shore as well as the work of the Spanish Navy. |
