Abstrakt: In journalism, framing is about constructing images of reality. The article discusses how Norwegian newspapers cover and frame controversial medical technology. Using quantitative content analysis, I study Aftenposten's, Adresseavisen's and Verdens Gang's coverage of the two cases of foetal diagnostic and pre-implantation genetics diagnosis (PGD) over time. My empirical findings show that use of the rhetoric of hope and fear is common. For the most part, three news frames are applied : ⪡graded society/design babies/perfectionism⪢, ⪡New hope for sick children/foetus/medical break-through⪢ and high risk/uncertainty/potential danger (medical perspective)⪢. Coverage was positive in the early part of the period analysed, while negative coverage becomes widespread in the latter part. Findings related to black-and-white representations correspond with tendencies in the international literature on medical controversies in the mass media. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
