In May 2004, the U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration established the Global Threat Reduction Initiative (GTRI). The GTRI mission is to reduce and protect nuclear and radiological materials located at civilian sites worldwide. Internationally, over 40 countries are cooperating with GTRI to enhance security of facilities housing these materials. In July 2007, a GTRI delegation began working with the Uruguayan National Regulatory Authority in Radioprotection (National Regulatory Authority), which is part of the Ministry of Industry, Energy, and Minerals. The team conducted site assessments for the physical protection of radiological materials in Uruguay. Today, GTRI and the Government of Uruguay continue cooperative efforts to enhance physical security at several radiological sites, including a central storage facility, in the cities of Montevideo, Florida, and Salto. This paper describes the scope of physical protection work, lessons learned, and plans for future cooperation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
