Introduces and prints six letters written during 1892-93 by missionary Beatrice A. R. Stocker, which chronicle her experiences at the Porcupine mission station on the Pine Ridge Sioux Indian reservation in South Dakota. The letters, written shortly after the massacre at Wounded Knee, illuminate the workings of Presbyterian missions and Stocker's personal views on Sioux culture and offer a deeper understanding of lives of women missionaries on the northern Great Plains. |
