The article focuses on the making of soap in Provence, France, in the 18th century, and more particularly on the use of natural soda coming from the ashes of saline plants that grow in sea areas. Topics include the high quality of Spanish soda, the specificity of the growing of these plants, and the evolution of the market concerning these plants. An analysis of the maritime commerce occurring at this period is presented. The article also examines the way that this commerce ended in the late 18th century. |
