The article discusses testimony given at the trial of accused conspirators in the assassination of U.S. president Abraham Lincoln, falsely implicating Confederate President Jefferson Davis and other Confederate agents in the conspiracy. The testimony given by three witnesses, Richard Montgomery, James Merritt, and Sanford Conover (real name Charles Dunham) is discussed, as is public controversy over the trial being held in secret, the results of the decision to make it public, and evidence of a broad effort to implicate Confederate leaders in Lincoln's assassination. |
