This study examined the impact of planning and implementing a community health fair on perceived competence in the seven areas of responsibility among predominantly Hispanic health education students at a minority-serving university on the U.S./Mexico border. The study highlights the impact of facilitational advocacy on perceived competence among health education students, and serves as an example of how a community health fair can facilitate education, advocacy, and empowerment within a priority population. Students completed The Self Assessment for Health Educators - Perceived Competence from the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing. Perceived student competence significantly improved in six of the seven responsibility areas. Evaluation was the only responsibility area in which a significant increase in perceived competence was not noted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
