Asperger's syndrome is named after Hans Asperger, a Viennese pediatrician who, in 1940, first described a set of behavior patterns apparent in some of his patients. It is a condition marked by impaired social interactions and certain kinds of repetitive patterns of behavior. Asperger's syndrome is very similar to or may be the same as high-functioning autism; some researchers believe that Asperger's syndrome is simply a mild form of autism. For purposes of classification, it is generally considered to be an autism spectrum disorder. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
