The article presents information regarding the political activities of the Indians of North America within the Northwest Territory at the end of the 18th-century in response to the American victory of the U.S. Revolutionary War and the beginning of its western expansion. Details are given describing the formation and structure of the Northwest Indian Confederacy, highlighting the proceedings and procedures of the political system. Specific resolutions of debate between several tribes such as the Iroquois, Wyandot and Ottawa regarding concessions or hostility towards U.S. envoys are described. Final comments are given evaluating the efficacy of the Indian Confederacy as a system and for the contemporary needs of the tribes. |
