The article presents an extensive overview of the ecclesiastical structure and history of the Hungarian bishopric of Nyitra. Details are given describing the establishment and continuity of the diocese from the 9th to 13th centuries, noting several different changes in organization through the dynasties of Kings Andrew I, St. Stephen I, and Béla III. The links between the bishopric and the Moravian Christian tradition, the tithing structure of the era, and the cult of St. Emmeram are particularly outlined. Further discussion is given relating the impact of geopolitical conflicts on the church's episcopal stability. |
