Abstrakt: A chapter from the book "American Notes and Queries Supplement: Studies in English and American Literature," Volume 1, edited by John L. Cutler and Lawrence S. Thompson is presented. It considers the imprisoned canary and its master in Frank Norris' novel "McTeague" as symbolic counterparts, both subjected to the law of nature and are incapable of escape. Also explained is the use of the cage as a reminder of the brute's attempt to escape and the canary as a symbol of man in the prison of existence.
