Abstrakt: A biography is presented for the Seneca Indian sachem, U.S. brigadier general, canal engineer and friend of the U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant Do-ne-ho-wa, or Ely S. Parker. He was born on the Tonawanda Seneca Reservation in Western New York in 1828 and attended a Baptist mission school near the reservation. During the U.S. Civil War he served under General Grant as military secretary.
