Abstrakt: We attempt to characterize affect and its associated social and cognitive aspects, in a mathematics classroom, as inner-city students express themselves spontaneously while working in groups. We focus on several students, their interactions with peers, the teacher, and the environment in which they live. We propose several --archetypal affective structures'' for which we see evidence, as students solve mathematical problems. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
