The purpose of this paper is to describe a model for analyzing the quality of mathematical discourse in online asynchronous discussions. Using the constant comparative methodology for developing theory, the analysis revealed five hierarchical stages for coding mathematical discourse: participation, contribution, deliberation, justification, and expansion. The paper also discusses implications of the findings and recommendations for research. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
