The article presents an exploration into the founding and early history of the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the 1820s, particularly highlighting their involvement with education, technological research and the industrialization process of the city. Several central members of the Institute are profiled and their collaborative work in exhibiting and supporting technological innovation is described. Through examination of this group and their activities, broader implications are drawn concerning the socio-cultural history of science and technology. |
