The article offers information on Royal 19 D I, which is a compilation of popular prose romances and travel chronicles. These travel chronicles include the important treatise on crusading intended for Philip VI's, King of France, council in its earliest translation into French, the anonymous "Directoire." Moreover, it also focuses on the artistic emphasis of the manuscript, known as the Crusading Miscellany. In this manuscript, scenes of crusade and foreign adventure occur in locations keyed with great specificity in the text, however, the miniatures rarely include a single topographic element allowing identification of an individual site. |
