Abstrakt: The article discusses the Spirit Lake Massacre of 1857, focusing on one of the victims in particular, Dr. Isaac H. Harriott. The details of the massacre, in which about 40 Iowa settlers were killed by Sioux Indians, are recounted, and Harriott's biography is sketched, including his childhood in New Jersey and his move to Red Wing, Minnesota and then to the Spirit Lake settlement in Iowa. A number of Harriott's letters leading up to the massacre are reprinted, as are a pair of letters afterward from his father, James Harriott, to his grandmother. The recollections of massacre survivor Abbie Gardner Sharp are referenced repeatedly as a source.
