The article discusses how the book "The Antwerp Songbook," of "Het Antwerps Liedboek," provides information regarding music in the Middle Ages. The book was printed in Antwerp, Belgium by printer Jan Roelants and contained lyrics for songs. The author suggests the lack of surviving copies of the book and its influence in other musical literature may indicate its popularity and notes the presence of work by poet Matthijs de Castelein in the book. Many of the songs presented in the book are love songs and ballads as well as political songs. Lyrics from a song on Spring, a comedic ballad, a political song focusing on Charles V, king of Spain and a poem depicting a traveler leaving his lover are presented. |
