On the Phylogeny and Taxonomy of the Genus Uromastyx Merrem, 1820 (Reptilia: Squamata: Agamidae: Uromastycinae) - Resurrection of the Genus Saara Gray, 1845.

Abstrakt: The article focuses on the study of Uromastyx, medium sized to large lizards inhabiting the world desert belt from North Africa to northwestern India, with the use of genetic and morphological method. The study uses samples of muscle tissue taken from fresh specimens as well as from preserved specimens. It shows that five well supported clades within Uromastyx sensu stricto are recognizable and formed an unresolved polytomy which include Uromastyx acanthinura group, U. aegyptia group, and U. ocellata group. Information on the resurrection of genus Saara is elaborated.
