The article discusses the history of migration of residents of Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts to Maine during the later 18th century. The author suggests that factors in the migration include economic hardship resulting from the Revolutionary War, occupational hazards of seafaring life, nepotism and family strife, and inadequacy of the land for agricultural production. The article describes the hazards of working at sea and pilots, seamen, and mariners being lost at sea. Other topics include family feuds, island heritage, and family histories of the Daggett, Riggs, and Chase families. |
