Abstrakt: The article discusses the history of jazz music criticism in Chicago, Illinois and the influence of journalist and bandleader Dave Peyton. The social influence of the journal the "Chicago Defender" is analyzed in terms of black identity and racial uplift. The author suggests that Peyton's criticism embodies a sociocultural shift from the journal's ethos of musical uplift to individualized musical attitudes shared by the black working class. The shift also marks a cultural transition from written music in ballrooms and theaters to an improvisational style practiced by musicians such as Louis Armstrong. Other topics include formal musical training, the relationship of black musicians' unions to the struggle for racial equality, and film soundtracks.
