According to the stress-muscular hyperactivity model of temporomandibular (TM) disorders, psychological stress results in increased masticatory muscle activity, which then results in symptoms of masticatory pain and dysfunction. in a test of this model, 23 TM pain patients and matched controls were exposed to a physical stress task. The results provided mixed support for the stress-muscular hyperactivity model, in that TM patients had higher masseter muscle activity than controls throughout the session, but did not otherwise respond differentially. The relationship of these results with previous research, and implications for the stress-muscular hyperactivity model of TM disorders are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
