The article discusses the role of the shipbuilding industry in Beaumont, Texas in the U.S. World War II effort. The industry is said to have made a significant contribution by building the vessels used to transport guns, tanks, trucks, ammunition, medicines, bandages and food to the soldiers fighting the war. Beaumont was placed in a unique position to build ships for the war effort through two long chain of events, including the awarding of a contract to Pennsylvania Shipyards, Inc. The company was able to deliver 109 ships with only forty-eight months lapsing between the first and the last deliveries. |
