Abstrakt: Chapter 13 of the book "A Long Way to Go: Conversations About Race by African American Faculty and Graduate Students," edited by Darrell Cleveland is presented. This chapter analyzes major student-based factors encountered by the author that disrupt the collegiate teaching environment and impede learning. Several classroom management styles that foster understanding of how communication channels can break down are discussed. It stresses the need for maintaining respect for African American faculty.
