The article reports that the cuts in defense spending introduced by U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates in his budget proposal has not significantly affected the Navy. It notes that the shipbuilding plans of the service, which include the Littoral Combat Ship, Zumwalt-class destroyers and additional Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, remained mostly intact in the proposed budget by Gates. It cites amphibious ships as the one major area where the proposed budget redirected a Navy plan. |
