| Abstrakt: | An encyclopedia entry for African American dancer and anthropologist Katherine Dunham is presented. Born on June 22, 1909, Dunham is considered the Grand Dame of American Dance. During the Great Depression, Dunham opened her first dance school with the help of friends and her Russian dance teacher, Madame Ludmila Speranzeva. Her studies of African and West Indian dances are also noted. |
