Abstrakt: Purpose: To evaluate the smoothness of the apical surface after Nd:YAG noncontact laser irradiation in vitro. Materials and Methods: The crowns were removed from thirty extracted human canines, which were then endodontically treated using a standard technique. Apicoectomy was performed using a handpiece and surgical bur. The teeth were divided into three groups of 10. Half of the area of the apical surface was irradiated with Nd:YAG laser in noncontact mode for 30 s. For each group, a different average power was used: 1.6 W, 2.0 W. and 2.4 W. The apical surfaces were observed using SEM. Three observers evaluated the images obtained at 500X and 2000X, giving them individual scores. Results were analyzed statistically. Results: The individual evaluation showed better scores of surface smoothness for the lased surfaces, with significant differences at 2000X but not always at 500 X. There was no difference between the different average powers studied. Conclusion: Nd:YAG noncontact laser irradiation of apical surfaces after apicoectomy can promote apical surface smoothness.
