Abstrakt: A biography of Gabrielė Petkevičaitė, teacher and leader of the Lithuanian women's movement before World War I, is presented. Petkevičaitė was born on March 18, 1861 into a Catholic gentry family and graduated from a private girls' school with an elementary school teacher's license in 1876. The notion of women's emancipation and the necessity of girls' education became her interest after reading the works of Eliza Orzeszkowa and the periodical "Swit." She also set up a secret secular school in 1890.
