This paper provides an overview of the phenomenon of international teacher migration from developing nations to an industrialized country, with a focus on the situation in the UK. Findings are discussed of a study of 192 teachers who were recruited to teach in the UK. The research focuses on four key dimensions of migration: the impact of migration on source countries; pay/compensation in source countries as a push factor in the migration formula; ethical practices of recruitment agencies; and awareness of teachers of the Commonwealth Teacher Recruitment Protocol. The Protocol is a significant policy initiative, endorsed by the ILO, UNESCO and OAS. The study serves to understand and improve long-term implementation strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
