Abstrakt: There are multiple gender gaps in health identified across the adult and child health literatures but little dialogue among the different domains. The exact nature of those gaps varies by both type of condition and life course stage. We contend that the complicated dynamic between gender and health cannot be understood fully until we have comprehensive information that spans more of the life course. Although available research has provided important insights into how gender and other social characteristics, such as race/ethnicity, income, or education interact to produce gender differences in health, existing knowledge is still limited in that it focuses primarily on the middle of the life course, excluding much of early life course experiences. We address this gap in the literature, using population-based data from the National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH), to expand our knowledge regarding the dynamic relationship between gender and health in early and later stages in the life course. Results show how gender shapes the chronic health experiences of children in the U.S and how the gender gap in child health helps us understand gendered chronic health trajectories across the life course.
