Guided by professions theory, we explore the role of "structural" factors in explaining Canadian family physicians' provision of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). Our results suggest that organizational settings discourage the use of CAM, while solo clinical practices are most conducive to its use. We also found that those trained in French-language medical schools are less likely than their English-language trained colleagues to use CAM, and that physicians in British Columbia are the most likely to offer CAM. Surprisingly, however. Provincial differences do not appear to be related to differences in legislation regarding CAM use. These findings hold despite controlling for important characteristics of the physicians and patients, suggesting that structural factors play an important role in influencing physicians' behavior.
