The article explores cases where flow restrictions within tubes in oil refining heaters led to melting from the inside out. The tubes studied failed by overheating, and hydrocarbon leakage caused an internal fire that further damaged the tubes. The result of the investigations showed that the common factor in the cases was partially or totally interrupted flow within the tubes. The interrupted flow and resulting overheating first leads to coke formation, then continues to raise the temperature to 1,147° C and higher. |
