| Abstrakt: | A biography of Brazilian poet Antônio Gonçalves Dias is presented. He was born in Caxias on August 10, 1823 to a Portugese shopkeeper and a cafusa. He enjoyed success in academic and public life despite his illegitimacy and his mixed ancestry. Most of his poetry can be divided into Romantic set-pieces, autobiographical lyrics and works dealing with the Middle Ages. His purpose is to use history to construct a distinctive national identity for Brazilians and to create a literature capable of expressing that identity. |
