The article discusses an investigation into whether food availability is a reliable indicator of cheetah presence in Iran. Based on common belief, the Asiatic cheetah Acinonyx jubatus venaticus occurs wherever gazelles exist. The investigation was conducted between 2000 and 2008 in present and past habitats of the Asiatic cheetah with the goal of illustrating the main conservation needs of the subspecies in the country. Several case studies are also presented which indicate that food availability may not describe the habitat selection of cheetahs in Iran. |
