12 cases of neonatal malaria were encountered during the period from June to October of 2006 in G.Udaygiri , in the district of Kandhamal, a CHC catering to tribal areas of south orissa.. 4 were congenital the rest were acquired. History of maternal malaria was present in 80%.Antenatal chloroquine prophylaxis was not taken in 25% inadequate in 75%. Fever and anemia were universal. All except one were either marginally or frank Low birth weight [LBW] . Both P.Vivax and P.Falciparum were found in congenital cases, who were sicker, needed artesunate and took longer to recover. Among the acquired cases 7 were of P vivax who responded to chloroquine , while lone case of P. Falciparum didn't respond to chloroquine and needed artesunate. There were no deaths among babies, though one mother died on the way to hospital. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
