The article provides information on the art collection of the Plains Indian Museum at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Wyoming. It notes that the collection of the museum is historically tied to cavalry scout and showman William F. Cody. However, the collection has expanded beyond the North Plains' original assemblage of clothing and accouterments from Lakota performers of Buffalo Bills's Wild West. Ultimately, the museum added other significant private collections which include Richard Pohrt, Milford G. Chandler, and Robert L. Anderson. Moreover, the museum also included art works from Plateau and Southwest including Navajo and Hopi weaving, jewelry, pottery and baskets. The programs initiated by the museum to serve the needs of the Native communities are also discussed. |
