The main purpose of this project was to assess the ability of nurses to evaluate their own abilities to manage pain, assess patient pain, and provide an appropriate pain intervention. The sample that completed a survey included 205 nurses with various educational backgrounds, years of service, and certifications who represented various clinical areas. There were three notable outcomes. Nurses with higher levels of education tended to give themselves lower self-assessment scores related to pain and symptom management and ability to care for the dying. Overall, the sample was able to assess intensity of patient pain correctly. However, their responses suggest a need to education related to management of pain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
