Abstrakt: The purpose of this article is to describe four performance indicators to use as a scorecard to monitor progress in meeting the shortage of registered nurses in Hawai'i. In addition, the RN shortage in the state is described and progress in addressing the situation to date is reviewed. In 2005, a survey was mailed to a stratified, random sample of registered nurses (RNs) residing in the state. The mean age of RNs was 49.3 years, and 69.9% plan to retire by 2020. The current nursing workforce is aging and the profession is not attracting younger, more diverse individuals. A scorecard is proposed to monitor progress into the future to assure continuing health care for the people of Hawai'i. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
