This essay examines the Jami Masjid in Agra, India and the mosque of the Sufi saint Mullah Shah Badakshi in Srinagar, Kashmir as translations or visual articulations of the dual personas of the Mughal princess Jahanara Begum, daughter of Emperor Shah Jahan. The dual character of the princess as exemplified in the design of the mosques and in her biographical Sufi release "Risala-i- Sahibiyah" is explored. The spiritual authority of the unmarried princess as a piri-muridi is considered. |
