Abstrakt: Chapter 34 of the book "Handbook of Water and Wastewater Microbiology" is presented. It presents a study on recalcitrant organic chemicals and its effect on the environment after prolonged period of accumulation. Details related to different degradation processes like the use of white rot fungi, acclimation of microbial population and the use of designer detergents or artificial surfactants are discussed. The study stressed the importance of having transnational law enforcement to help protect the environment.
