An encyclopedia entry about the soil habitats of insects is presented. Arthropod behavior and adaptations are influenced by soil texture and structure. A characterization of the soil environment, such as soil solids, soil water, pore spaces and soil temperature, is presented. The different life-forms that have adapted to the various condition that exist in the soil are cited, which include euedaphons, epedaphons and hemiedaphons. Also discussed re the adaptive strategies of soil arthropods and the impact of soil on pathogens, predators and parasitoids. |
