Shallow lakes and reservoirs are very common in Europe. They harbour a wide variety of organisms and are an important component of the landscape structure. In addition to their ecological role, they also support a wide array of socio-economic activities, such as fisheries, recreation, water storage (flood prevention) and water supply for agriculture. Shallow lakes are, however, subject to many threats and many are highly impacted by human activities. They are particularly vulnerable to nutrient loading, water level regulation and the infiltration of pesticides. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
