Abstrakt: Objective: In the last two decades there has been a marked increase in the prevalence of allergic rhinitis in Western industrialized nations. Complimentary and alternative medicines (CAM) are extensively used in the treatment of allergic rhinitis, but evidence-based recommendations are lacking. Acupuncture presents a new modality of treatment and is used extensively for the treatment of allergic rhinitis in traditional Chinese medicine. In view of the importance of the subject matter and the absence of a literature review of acupuncture specifically for allergic rhinitis, we conducted a review in an attempt to summarize the current evidence for this topic. There is currently sufficient evidence from research showing the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of allergic rhinitis. However our study indicates that there is a need of further research with qualitative and quantitative study. To fully assess the efficacy of the acupuncture treatment, studies need to address and report different aspects of therapy comprehensively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
