The article discusses the wooden lathe turning work of David Ellsworth. He founded a studio in 1975 dedicated to lathe turning. Ellsworth explores the sculptural properties of lathe turning while eschewing a concern for function. He has invented new tools, adapted from ceramics and basketry, for use in lathe turning. This has enabled him to create extremely thin-walled, almost closed forms through small openings. The Philadelphia Museum of Art owns "Vessel," a large, rare redwood burl, by Ellsworth. |
