The article focuses on the key characteristics of moral panics with some of the symptoms of decivilizing processes by applying the ideas of Norbert Elias. It notes that moral panics are defined as processes whereby a real, or imagined, social problem becomes highlighted, or manufactured. It mentions that "The Civilizing Process" by Norbert Elias traces the historical development of manners and the formation of states. It concludes that the possible outcomes of moral panics are disproportionality, and creation of folk devils, while the outcome of decivilizing processes are inaction of central state authority, and decrease in mutual identification. |
