The article offers information on the clay analysis of the sculptural works by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to determine the aspects of the clay and examine trace concentrations of transition and rare earth elements on Bernini's works. The structure and clay composition used in Bernini's workshop was studied. Distinct chemistries of the geological samples between the sculpture's clay and the location of Bernini's studio in Monte Vaticano was observed. The proximity of Bernini's workshop to the Monte Vaticano sites suggests that the artist's clay may well have originated from this sites. |
