Abstrakt: The past years have seen an explosion in the number of virtual knowledge communities and community membership is assuming an increasingly important role in the working lives of their members. Many communities have a number of common, key constituent elements. This paper examines the characteristics of real and virtual communities, identifies key elements and proposes a model for analysing and evaluating them over time. Focusing on the interaction and knowledge exchange activities in a virtual community of freelance translators, an empirical study of life in a thriving knowledge community is presented and recommendations made for continued success.
